Biodiversity Monitoring at the Tonle Sap Lake of Cambodia: A Comparative Assessment of Local Methods

Abstract: This paper assesses local biodiversity monitoring methods practiced in the Tonle Sap Lake of Cambodia. For the assessment we used the following criteria: methodological rigor, perceived cost, ease of use (user friendliness), compatibility with existing activities, and effectiveness of intervention. Constraints and opportunities for execution of the methods were also considered. Information was collected by use of: (1) key informant interview, (2) focus group discussion, and (3) researcher's observation. The mo… Show more

“…Drawing on Commodore and colleagues ( 2017 ), we characterize bottom-up community-based environmental-monitoring programs as initiated, implemented, and managed by the communities. “…The primary objective of this paper is to assess the three existing monitoring systems from the perspective of methodology rigour, perceived cost, user-friendliness, compatibility with existing day-to-day activities of the local stakeholders, efficiency of intervention and constraints and opportunities for execution. The paper, moreover, provides the basic framework for an in-depth discussion of locally based monitoring methods (see Seak et al 2011).…”
