The present study introduced an in vitro shoot organogenesis protocol for the medicinal plant Scutellaria araxensis (Lamiaceae). Stem, leaf, and petiole explants were cultured in half-strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing different concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) alone or in combination with thidiazuron (TDZ), indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), or α-naphthalene acetic acid. Callus formation occurred from stem and petiole explants in most cultures; however, in leaf explants, it was observed only in cultures containing 0.5 mg/l BAP supplemented with TDZ at all concentrations. The highest frequency of indirect shoot induction (100 and 90%) with an average of 20.33 and 12 shoots per explant was observed in stem-derived calli cultured on halfstrength MS medium containing 2.0 mg/l BAP plus 0.5 and 1.5 mg/l TDZ, respectively. The best direct shoot organogenesis (40%) was observed in stem explants cultured on half-strength MS medium containing 0.5 mg/l BAP and 0.5 mg/l IBA with a mean of 18 shoots per stem explant. The regenerated micro-shoots were elongated on a medium fortified with 0.5 mg/l gibberellic acid and then successfully rooted in half-strength MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l IBA. The obtained plantlets were acclimatized in a growth chamber with a survival rate of 100%. This study is the first report of a simple and efficient in vitro shoot organogenesis and regeneration protocol for S. araxensis by using stem explants, which could be useful for the conservation, genetic manipulation, and exploitation of biological molecules of this valuable genetic source.

Patterns and Predictors of Medicinal Plant Use among Ethnolinguistic Groups in the 21st Century Philippines

Traditional medicinal plants are integral to the diverse ethnolinguistic cultures and biodiversity in the Philippines. In this synthesis, we performed a Philippine-wide analysis of the knowledge, extent, and interactions of traditional plant use among various ethnolinguistic groups. Our synthesis identified 796 plant species from 160 families and 65 orders utilised by 35 ethnolinguistic groups to treat 25 disease types. We found strong connections between linguistically similar groups, indicating that geographical proximity, linguistic background, shared cultural practices, and environmental factors collectively influence the patterns of medicinal plant usage among the different groups. We developed the Species Use Priority Importance (SUPRIM) indicator to assess the priority level of plant species based on their use among ethnolinguistic groups and disease types. Factors such as availability of healthcare facilities, proximity to roads, educational facilities, and tree density were significantly correlated with higher SUPRIM indicator values. We posit that environmental status shaped the values of medicinal plant species within ethnolinguistic communities. Understanding these dynamics is essential to effectively conserve ecosystems and indigenous peoples that rely on them. Continued research efforts and conservation initiatives dedicated to the integration of traditional knowledge into healthcare systems are essential for preserving this invaluable heritage and promoting sustainable healthcare practices in the Philippines.

Tren bertani dikala pandemi saat ini digemari oleh masyarakat, terlebih tanaman herbal. Sehingga masyarakat banyak mengikuti tren tersebut. Akan tetapi, masyarakat perlu ilmu dalam bertani tersebut. Dalam pembibitannya, tanaman herbal memiliki karakteristik dan perlakuan lingkungan yang berbeda-beda. Sehingga diperlukan pengetahuan yang baik terkait proses pembibitan tanaman tersebut. Konsultan pertanian dibutuhkan untuk memberikan rekomendasi tanaman herbal apa yang cocok sesuai dengan faktor lingkungan. Melalui sistem pakar, masyarakat dapat mengetahui informasi yang baik dan benar seperti dari pakar langsung. Dalam penelitian ini, sistem pakar rekomendasi tanaman herbal dibangun untuk membantu memberikan rekomendasi tanaman herbal yang cocok ditanam berdasarkan faktor lingkungan. Faktor-faktor lingkungan yang digunakan untuk dasar rekomendasi adalah ketinggian wilayah, suhu, kelembapan udara, curah hujan, dan jenis tanah. Pada penelitian ini sampel akuisisi pengetahuan tanaman herbal yang digunakan adalah 12 jenis. Metode yang digunakan pada sistem pakar ini adalah metode certainty factor. Melalui metode certainty factor akan membantu menangani ketidakmampuan pakar dalam mendefinisikan antara sebuah aspek lingkungan dengan tanaman yang cocok ditanam secara pasti. Dengan memilih faktor lingkungan yang dilihat maka sistem dapat merekomendasi tanaman herbal dengan nilai certainty factor terbesar. Hasil dari penelitian ini dapat memberikan masyarakat informasi rekomendasi tanaman yang cocok untuk lokasi daerah mereka serta memberikan tingkat keyakinannya.
