Biodiversity assessment of African locust bean (Parkia biglobosa) accessions from Savanna and Forest zones of Nigeria as revealed by seed storage proteins and RAPD markers

Abstract: Understanding the level and distribution of genetic diversity in African locust bean (Parkia biglobosa) would strengthen breeding and conservation programmes towards domestication and sustainable use of this species. Sixteen accessions of P. globosa were assessed for variability based on seed morphology, seed protein and DNA profiling. Significant variation in seed characteristics were observed across locations. Seed protein profiling by SDS-PAGE revealed homogeneity as most bands were found common in all acce… Show more

“…In addition to being prospective food sources, edible oil, fodder lumber, firewood, and green manure, locust bean trees thrive in arid regions. Onnyi et al ( 2004) estimated that approximately 200,000 tons of African locust bean seeds are harvested annually in Nigeria alone, in addition to volumes produced in the savannah region of Oyo, Osun, and Kwara States of Nigeria [11]. Unfortunately, the locust bean is quickly losing prominence to other flavouring agents such as Maggi, Royco, Knorr, etc., and its nutritional value cannot be compared to that of these synthetic sources.…”

“…Genetic variability assessment is one of the fundamental steps towards domestication of wild tree species, since it would help strengthen breeding and conservation programmes [421]. This is crucial for domestication and sustainable management, particularly in the context of rapid environmental changes [400].…”
