“…Breeding of this species was confirmed in the southwest of Algeria: in El Golea and Kerzaz in April 1966 and in Beni Abbes in 1974 (Daly and Daly 1975), in Boughezoul in 1978(Jacob and Jacob 1980, in Ain Ben Khellil and in El Kala in 1992 (Boumezbeur 1993;Isenmann and Moali 2000). Cramp and Simmons (1977) reported that the Ruddy Shelduck inhabits lakes, salt lagoons and marshes, hills, high plateaus and mountainous regions up to an altitude of nearly 5000 m. However, in our study, the species used wetlands located at more than 41 m below sea level (Chott Merouane) (Bensaci et al 2013). Quan et al (2001) and Chang, Yu, and Liu (1997) reported that shallow and deep water as well as farmland formed the major part of the bird's habitat.…”

in the main wetlands of the Oued Righ complex (Eastern Sahara of Algeria) aimed to study the habitat use and distribution pattern of the Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea. As the species was recorded breeding at most sites of the wetland complex, it was given the resident breeder status, which differs from the one it had previously. The maximum number of Ruddy Shelducks (284 individuals) was recorded each year during the winter season (second half of December). The Ruddy Shelduck (60% of population) shows preference for shallow middle-sized salt ponds with a high proportion of open water (e.g. Chott Tindla and Chott Sidi Slimane). No interannual variations were observed in habitat use; moreover, seasonal variations in the use of shallow salt pond habitat may be the outcome of hot and dry climate of this arid region.2007 m. rugpjūčio -2011 m. gegužės mėnesiais svarbiausiuose Oued Righ komplekso pelkynuose (Sacharos rytinė dalis, Alžyras) buvo tiriamas rudosios urvinės anties Tadorna ferruginea paplitimas ir buveinių naudojimas. Nustačius, kad šios antys peri daugumoje pelkynų komplekso vietų, rūšiai buvo suteiktas sėslios perinčios rūšies statusas, kuris skiriasi nuo ankstesnio. Didžiausias rudųjų urvinių ančių skaičius (284 individai) buvo registruojamas kiekvienų metų žiemos sezono metu (antra gruodžio mėnesio pusė). Šios rūšies antys (60% populiacijos) teikia pirmenybę vidutinio dydžio, sekliems ir druskingiems vandens telkiniams su didele atvirų plotų dalimi, pvz., Chott Tindla ir Chott Sidi Slimane ežer-ams. Buveinių naudojimo skirtumų tyrimo metais nebuvo pastebėta. Seklių druskingų vandens telkinių sezoniniai naudojimo pokyčiai gali būti dėl karšto ir sauso šio regiono klimato.

Understanding the environmental factors shaping wetland attractiveness for waterbirds is an important question in wetland ecology and for conservation purposes. However, detailed data from numerous North African wetlands, notably those situated in inland areas, are still lacking. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify the factors influencing wetland use by waterbirds wintering in one of such poorly known habitat systems, namely the Saharan wetland complex of Douz, in south‐western Tunisia. Thirty‐four waterbird species (20 wading birds and 14 waterfowl species) were found to winter in this area. Using discriminant function analyses, we found that wetland size was the unique variable discriminating between occupied and unoccupied sites for total waterbirds and wading birds, while waterfowl distribution was related to both wetland size and water depth. Wetland size also provided the strongest predictor of species richness of wading birds, waterfowl and total waterbirds. Overall, our findings highlight the importance of wetland size as a key factor determining the attractiveness of wetlands for waterbirds wintering in the Saharan wetland complex of Douz. The possible explanations of this wetland size effect are discussed.
