Biodiesel Production from Vegetable Oils and Animal Fat over Solid Acid Double-Metal Cyanide Catalysts

Abstract: Biodiesel comprises of fatty acid alkyl esters prepared from vegetable oils or animal fat by esterification/ transesterification with short-chain alcohols (methanol or ethanol, for example). It is a biodegradable renewable fuel. Its production is growing exponentially due to greater concerns about environmental protection and depletion of fossil fuel resources. Further, its production from nonedible oils and animal fat is more desirable than from edible oils due to lower cost of non-edible feedstocks and elimi… Show more

“…Prior to the EDS analysis of the sulfonated materials, they were treated with a 0.1 M BaCl2 solution. The relative wettability by the hydrophobic reactant (sunflower oil) [29,30] was evaluated by turbidimetry [31]. 1 mg of each catalyst powder was sonicated with 2 ml sunflower oil for 15 min, and immediately afterwards, the light extinction was measured in a spectrophotometer (Hewlett-Packard 8453 diode array UV-visible spectrophotometer) at 700 nm, as a function of time.…”

“…The heterogeneous acid catalysts, such as ion exchange resins (amberlyst, nafion silica, etc. ), tungsten (WO3/ZrO2), sulfated catalyst (SO4 2-/ZrO2, SO4 2-/TiO2), hetero polyacid, Fe-Zn DMC (double metal cyanide catalysts), zinc stearate (Zn(C18H35O2)2), zirconium oxide (ZrO2), titanium oxide (TiO2), tin oxide (SnO2), zeolites, sulfonic ion-exchange resin, sulfonic modified mesostructured silica, and sulfonated carbon-based catalyst, are usually used in the esterification or transesterification [39,43,46,140,[135][136][137][138][139][140][141][142][143]. Concerning the reaction mechanism of heterogeneous acid catalysis for transesterification, FFA reacts with methanol to form methyl ester.…”

“…Homogeneous acid catalysts are also used for this rearrangement, which Yadav and Lande (2006) replaced profitably by using eco-friendly solid acids. One of the interests is nowadays focused also on biodiesel (Melero 2009;Srinivas & Satyarthi 2011). It is usually prepared from crude and refined triglyceride containing raw materials, such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and wastes-for instance waste cooking oil and yellow and brown grease.…”
