In this research, the possibility of using Ca(OH)2 in the form of commercial hydrated lime as a catalyst for the methanolysis of refined rapeseed oil was evaluated. Characterization of unused catalyst was performed by SEM-EDS, laser diffraction, XRF, BET, XRD and TG/DTG methods, and vegetable oil was analyzed for physicochemical characteristics. Within methanolysis, the effects of catalyst loading, reaction temperature and reaction time on methyl ester yield, density and viscosity of biodiesel, as well as the possibility of catalyst reuse were investigated. The obtained results showed that hydrated lime is an efficient catalyst for transesterification of vegetable oil, whereby the use of 3 wt% of catalyst relative to oil weight, at temperature 60℃ and mixing rate 1000 rpm after 120 min of transesterification reaction achieved a yield of methyl esters 98.76%. With three reuses of hydrated lime, without intermediate washing and regeneration procedures, the yield of rapeseed oil methyl ester remained above 90%.

In the present research, we describe a novel approach for in situ synthesis of cellulose microfibrils- grafted -hydroxyapatite (CMFs- g -HAP N (8%)) as an adsorbent using phosphate rock and date palm petiole wood as alternative and natural Moroccan resources. The synthesized CMFs- g -HAP N (8%) was extensively characterized by several instrumental techniques like thermogravimetry analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis. The developed adsorbent was used to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The influences of different adsorption parameters such as contact time, initial metal concentration, and amount of adsorbent were also investigated thoroughly using response surface methodology in order to optimize the batch adsorption process. The results confirmed that the adsorption process follows a polynomial quadratic model as high regression parameters were obtained ( R 2 value = 99.8% for Pb(II) and R 2 value = 92.6% for Cu(II)). According to kinetics and isotherm modeling, the adsorption process of both studied ions onto CMFs- g -HAP N (8%) followed the pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium data at 25 °C were better fitted by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of the CMFs- g -HAP N (8%) adsorbent toward Pb(II) and Cu(II) are 143.80 and 83.05 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the experiments of multicycle adsorption/desorption indicated that the CMFs- g -HAP N (8%) adsorbent could be regenerated and reused up to three cycles. The high adsorption capacities of both studied metals and regeneration performances of the CMFs- g -HAP N (8%) suggest its applicability as a competitive adsorbent for large-scale utilization.

Nitrogen (N) is the most widely applied macronutrient to maintain soil fertility. However, the conventional N fertilizers applied to the soil are generally of low N use efficiency due to N loss by means of lixiviation and volatilization. Therefore, the application of slow-release N fertilizers is one of the advanced solutions to overcome these issues. The purpose of this study is to develop new slow-release N fertilizers (N-SRFs) pellets using oxidized cellulose nanocrystals (CNCOX) and citric acid grafted cellulose nanocrystals (CNCCA) modified natural hydroxyapatite hybrid nanocomposites (HAP–CNCox and HAP–CNCCA) as a carrier for nitrogen delivery. The HAP–CNCox and HAP–CNCCA hybrid composites were prepared by an in situ wet chemical precipitation method using phosphate rock as a source of calcium (Ca2+) and phosphorus (PO4 3–). Urea was immobilized onto the CNC–HAP composites in an aqueous solution to produce three N-SRF formulations: HAP–urea, HAP–CNCox–urea, and HAP–CNCCA–urea. Fertilizer formulations were fully characterized by means of structural (FTIR and DRX) and morphological (SEM) tools, and the results demonstrated that urea molecules are strongly bonded to HAP and HAP–CNC composites through several mechanisms including H-bonding, metal–ligand interactions, and physical storage within the existing micro- and nanopores. The water release experiment of developed N-SRFs demonstrated that the developed SRFs displayed a slow-release N property and required 18 days for a complete N release in water compared to the pure urea, which dissolves rapidly within the first 3 h. The release kinetics of urea in water was best described by Korsmeyer–Peppas, while the release mechanism in water is best described by a first-order kinetic model.
