Biodegradation of the ultraviolet filter benzophenone‐3 under different redox conditions

Abstract: Abstract-Biodegradation of the ultraviolet (UV) filter benzophenone-3 (BP-3) was investigated in the laboratory to understand its behavior and fate under oxic and anoxic (nitrate, sulfate, and Fe [III]-reducing) conditions. Biodegradation experiments were conducted in microcosms with 10% of activated sludge and digested sludge under oxic and anoxic conditions, respectively. Benzophenone-3 was well degraded by microorganisms under each redox condition. Under the redox conditions studied, the biodegradation half… Show more

“…The half-life (t 1/2 ) for Fe(VI) reaction with BP-3 is similar to those with free chlorine and molecular ozone in the same pH value, but several orders of magnitude lower than the biodegradation or the photolysis (Hernandez-Leal et al, 2011;Liu et al, 2011Liu et al, , 2012bNegreira et al, 2008;Rodil et al, 2009). For example, the t 1/2 value for BP-3 at an Fe(VI) concentration of 10 mg L À1 was 167.8 s at pH 8.0 in this study, and (Liu et al, 2012b). BP-3 was photostable under both UV and artificial solar light (Rodil et al, 2009;Liu et al, 2011).…”

“…BP-3 was found to be biodegraded in microcosms with 10% of activated sludge and digested sludge under oxic and anoxic condition (Liu et al, 2012b). Anaerobic biodegradation (t 1/2 ¼ 4.2 d) is a more favorable attenuation mechanism than oxic (t 1/2 ¼ 10.7 d) for removal of BP-3.…”

“…It is also a component of hexachlorophene and DDT, and diphenylmethane diisocyanate is a major component of polyurethane. However, very few investigations have addressed the bacterial degradation of diphenylmethane (19,20) or benzophenone (21). Focht and Alexander (22) have described a Hydrogenomonas isolate that grew on diphenylmethane and was able to cometabolize benzophenone and several related chlorinated analogs.…”
