Biodegradation of polystyrene (PS)-poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanocomposites using Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was synthesized using condensation polymerization of L-lactic acid using a controlled ultrasonic cavitation technique. Polystyrene (PS) was used to prepare the PS:PLA and PS:PLA:organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) composites. PS was dissolved in benzene (10:90) and kept overnight for dissolution. Meanwhile, surface modification of montmorillonite was done using a column chromatography technique and referred to as OMMT. The d-spacing was found to be 22 Å after modification due to… Show more

“…The FTIR spectrum of OMMT shows a characteristic peak at 3616 cm −1 (Fig. (d)) that corresponds to free –OH groups and clear –CH 2 – peaks at 2920 and 2854 cm −1 , in addition to the characteristic peaks of MMT …”

“…4(d)) that corresponds to free -OH groups and clear -CH 2 -peaks at 2920 and 2854 cm −1 , in addition to the characteristic peaks of MMT. 33 Figures 4(f)-(i) show FTIR spectra of OMMT-filled Viton rubber nanocomposites, which show characteristic peaks of both OMMT and Viton rubber in addition to new peaks at 2360 and 1635 cm −1 assigned to isocyanate and conjugated C C. There is a strong interaction between the rubber chains and Diak-3, which is generated at the time of vulcanization. Moreover, with increasing OMMT loading, the peak intensity of Viton:OMMT nanocomposites increases.…”

“…Montmorillonite shows a characteristic peak at 1033 cm −1 originating from SiOSi, whereas the peaks observed at 914 cm −1 and 3616 cm −1 corresponds to SiOH groups and free –OH groups, respectively. The peak at 2920 and 2854 cm −1 are for CH 2 groups in OMMT . To determine the effect of fungal attack during degradation process, PS:PLA and PS:PLA:OMMT composites were investigated using FTIR.…”

“…Particulate objects such as bacterial cells absorb or scatter light in proportion to their cell mass or number. An increase in the turbidity of liquid media and broths indicates an increase in the number of microbial cells capable of utilizing the test material as a sole carbon source [32] .…”
