“…Enhanced crude oil biodegradation in soil using organic manure or chemical fertilizer has been reported elsewhere (Sandvik et al 1986;El-Nawawy et al 1992;Ijah & Antai 2003a;Philp & Atlas 2005;Ubochi et al 2006;Abu & Onisuru 2006). The enhancement may be due to nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) present in the chicken droppings and fertilizer.…”

“…The occurrence of large amounts of hydrocarbons in the soil leads to a nitrogen deficiency and hence upsets the balance of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling at the spill site, thereby threatening the survival of soil biota (Jobson et al 1974;Braddock et al 1997). Previous studies reported that soil petroleum hydrocarbon degradation rates could be increased by addition of supplemental nutrients, particularly nitrogen and, to a lesser degree, phosphorus (Braddock et al 1997;Sandvik et al 1986). The present results provided field evidence that crude oil contamination was accompanied by depletion of the nutrient status in wetland soil.…”

“…Its scientific monitoring started in the early 1970s (Kincannon, 1972;Francke and Clark, 1974). Later, the process was systematically optimized in field and laboratory experiments (Lehtomake and Niemela, 1975;Waid, 1973, 1975;Raymond et at., 1976a;Huddleston and Meyers, 1978;Dibble and Bartha, 1979b;Arora et at., 1982;Brown and Donnelly, 1983;Sandvik et at., 1986;Shailubhai, 1986;Amaral, 1987;Tesan and Barbosa, 1987). Practical recommendations concerning landtreatment were summarized by the American Petroleum Institute (1980) in the USA and by CONCAWE (1980b) in Europe.…”
