“…The occurrence of large amounts of hydrocarbons in the soil leads to a nitrogen deficiency and hence upsets the balance of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling at the spill site, thereby threatening the survival of soil biota (Jobson et al 1974;Braddock et al 1997). Previous studies reported that soil petroleum hydrocarbon degradation rates could be increased by addition of supplemental nutrients, particularly nitrogen and, to a lesser degree, phosphorus (Braddock et al 1997;Sandvik et al 1986). The present results provided field evidence that crude oil contamination was accompanied by depletion of the nutrient status in wetland soil.…”
