Biodegradation of Blown Films Based on Poly(lactic acid) under Natural Conditions

Abstract: Summary: Commercially available polymer Bioflex 1 219F, blend of polylactic acid and biodegradable co-polyester, was used for film preparation, performed on monoextrusion blown moulding machine. Resulting thin film was investigated on biodegradability in composting conditions for 6 weeks. The influence of microbial attack on mechanical, physico-chemical properties, weight loss and surface morphology was tested weekly. The results obtained during 6 weeks of composting indicate relatively good accessibility to b… Show more

“…Biodegradable polymers may be divided into three groups: (1) Biopolymers of natural origin, (2) synthetic biodegradable polymers, and (3) modified polymeric materials to reach biodegradability 3. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable, thermoplastic, aliphatic polyester, derived from renewable resources 4, 5. PLA has gained attention as a replacement for conventional synthetic polymeric packaging as well as construction materials during the past decade 6, 7.…”

“…We have already informed that eq. (3) fails at low M n of PLA 3. Interestingly, the relation between T g and M n is relatively valid for PLACA samples even at low‐molecular weights of the polycondensation products obtained at higher CA concentrations.…”

“…6 Because of the fact that the whey is often considered undesirable waste, there is a significant interest in finding a new method for its utilization. 6,7 The polymerization step required LA of high monomer purity, which is technologically and financially demanding. However, as was previously mentioned, biotechnologically prepared LA can contain impurities such as organic acids, residual proteins, and inorganic compounds, which could affect the polymerization step.…”
