Biodegradable plastics: A review

Abstract: In this paper, the approach of biodegradation to reduce the environmental impact of plustic wastes is reviewed. The mechanism of biodegradation and the processing and applications of these materials are also discussed in relation to the structural characters of their molecules. The synthetic biodegradable materials such as starch based biodegradable materials are compared with naturdy occumhg biodegmdable materials such as poly(hydr0xy butyrate) (PHB) in terms of their applications, processing difJic u b , and… Show more

“…The deviations due to the input parameters and assumptions of the model are discussed as follows. Among the three parameters of initial porosity, bubble number density, and initial bubble diameter, if two parameters are given, the third one can be calculated by Equation (1). The initial porosity, φ 0 , was assumed to be 20% based on φ 0 = 1 − ρ m /ρ s at ρ m = 1200 kg/m 3 and ρ s = 1500 kg/m 3 .…”

“…Starch has been regarded as one of most promising raw materials to produce biodegradable thermoplastics. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Starch-based foam is a lightweight biodegradable thermoplastic material, which can be used in packaging. 7,8 Extrusion is able to produce starch-based foam continuously.…”
