Biodegradable Implants for Internal Fixation of Fractures and Accelerated Bone Regeneration

Abstract: Bone fractures have always been a burden to patients due to their common occurrence and severe complications. Traditionally, operative treatments have been widely used in the clinic for implanting, despite the fact that they can only achieve bone fixation with limited stability and pose no effect on promoting tissue growth. In addition, the nondegradable implants usually need a secondary surgery for implant removal, otherwise they may block the regeneration of bones resulting in bone nonunion. To overcome the … Show more

“…This innovative approach can eliminate secondary removal surgery, a common requirement with traditional metallic implants. By minimising the risk of long-term complications associated with implant retention, biodegradable implants offer a patient-friendly solution that aligns with sustainability principles and reduces invasiveness [ 51 ].…”

“…Traditional biological replacement materials mainly come under the following three categories: bioinert materials, bioactive materials, and bioactive materials with bone induction. 7 Among them, bioinert materials do not cause immune rejection, but instead play a partial supporting role and are gradually eliminated. 8 Bioactive materials can trigger certain biological reactions at the interface, but they do not have effective osteogenic effect, and the osteogenic effect is not good.…”

“…Unlike traditional implants, which require subsequent surgical removal after the bone has healed, bioresorbable implants eliminate the need for a second surgery. This not only reduces patient discomfort but also lowers the risk of complications associated with implant removal procedures [7,8].…”
