Biodegradable Hydrogels Based on Chitosan and Pectin for Cisplatin Delivery

Abstract: Preparation of stable hydrogels using physically (electrostatically) interacting charge-complementary polyelectrolyte chains seems to be more attractive from a practical point of view than the use of organic crosslinking agents. In this work natural polyelectrolytes—chitosan and pectin—were used, due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. The biodegradability of hydrogels is confirmed by experiments with hyaluronidase as an enzyme. It has been shown that the use of pectins with different molecular wei… Show more

“…However, it is essential to note that certain crosslinkers used in the chemical crosslinking process may have reported toxicity, requiring their extraction from the hydrogel before use to ensure safety. Physically crosslinked hydrogels, on the other hand, rely on non-covalent interactions, such as ionic contracts, hydrogen bonds, or hydrophobic interactions, to stop the dissolution of the polymer chains and keep the hydrogel structure stable [32]. Physically crosslinked hydrogels offer an alternative solution to address crosslinker toxicity concerns, as the interactions can be reversibly formed and disrupted, allowing for potential recycling or reprocessing of the hydrogel [33].…”

“…Biodegradable gels based on pectin and chitosan were obtained by a group under Khutoryanskiy; the rheological properties, swelling ability of gels, degradation under the action of hyaluronidase as an enzyme, and release of cisplatin were studied as well [13]. It has been shown that the use of pectins with different molecular weights makes it possible to prepare hydrogels with different rheological characteristics and swelling kinetics.…”
