The electrochemical oxidation (EO) treatment in water of Fantetra, a veterinary drug widely used in Chile, and its components: oxytetracycline hydrochloride, phtalylsulfathiazole and diphenhydramine, has been carried out at constant current using a BDD/Stainless steel system. First, solutions of each drug were electrolyzed following the decay of the absorbance of each compound and total organic carbon abatement. The mineralization of the Fantetra commercial formulation was also studied. An analysis of the degradation by-products was made by high performance liquid chromatography. Thus, during the degradation of each pharmaceutical by the electrochemical oxidation process, aliphatic carboxylic acids were detected prior to their complete mineralization to CO 2 and nitrogen ions, while NO 3 -and NH 4 + remain in the treated solution. This is an essential preliminary step towards the applicability of the EO processes for the treatment of wastewater containing pharmaceutical compounds.

Canadian pine cones (pine cone type I and pine cone type II) and deoiled canola meal were utilized as precursors for preparation of powdered activated carbons (PACs) using thermo‐chemical process. Physicochemical properties of the biomass and obtained adsorbents were evaluated. Prepared PACs were investigated for the adsorptive removal of acyclovir (ACV) from aqueous solutions. Pine cone type I PAC was found to have well developed pores and surface area. It was found to be suitable for removal of ACV from aqueous solution. Response surface methodology was used for the optimization of ACV adsorption on PAC prepared from pine cone type I and the development of predictive model. A second‐order polynomial equation fitted data well which indicated that the process variables such as temperature, pH and especially adsorbent dose had large impact on the ACV adsorption process. The optimum conditions for ACV removal were found to be 39 °C, pH 8 and 2 g/L of pine cone type I PAC dose. At these conditions, the removal of ACV was 90.3 %, which was close to the maximum predicted value of 92.5 %.

A continuously operated laboratory scale anaerobic and aerobic moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) combined with O3/H2O2 process was experimented for antibiotic fermentation‐based pharmaceutical wastewater. The experimental results indicated that 26.6% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was removed, and 931.75 mg/L of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) was produced under the optimum conditions of the anaerobic MBBR at an influent pH of 6.5, hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12 hr and organic loading rate (OLR) of 13 kg COD/(m3·d) for the hydrolysis/acidification process. In addition, 91.0% of COD was removed at 1.5 m3/h of aeration rate with the aerobic MBBR. The shape of bacteria inside the bio‐carriers was characterized by a scanning electron microscope. The anaerobic MBBR bacteria were observed as long bacilli, and the aerobic MBBR bacteria were observed as mainly cocci and short bacilli. Finally, the residual non‐biodegraded pollutants were mineralized by O3/H2O2 oxidation with 0.5 of H2O2/O3 molar ratio and 15 min of reaction time. The total removal efficiencies of COD and color reached 99.2 and 98.7%, respectively.
