The increasing production of wastes that are landfilled might contribute to sources of potentially toxic elements; this is the case of residual red gypsum tailings, a byproduct of titanium dioxide extraction. Revegetation of such a site is essential, and Mn phytoextraction may render the operations economically profitable. This study aimed to apply phytomanagement techniques for increasing the plant development, tailings revegetation and an optimal Mn phytoextraction using silver birch, the most abundant plant species on this site. To enhance the nutrient availability from the tailings, amendments that reduce the pH, i.e., pine bark chips, Miscanthus straw, white peat, and ericaceous compost, were mixed with residual red gypsum and birches were allowed to grow for 3 months. The pine bark chips and ericaceous compost led to a maximum decrease in pH, allowing the accumulation of up to 1400 mg Mn kg −1 dry matter in the leaves silver birch leaves. However, some nutrient competition was found in the pine bark treatment, which halved biomass production as compared to control. Further amendment addition may be needed to take advantage of the pine bark capabilities as a soil conditioner and Mn solubilizing treatment in residual red gypsum.

Abstract. Takarina ND. 2020. Remobilization of zinc in sediments by mangrove and its associated species in Blanakan River, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1743-1748. The biodiversity of mangrove and associated species have contribution to remove contaminants from aquatic environment, for example, river. This work aims to study the effects of mangrove and associated species in absorbing zinc (Zn) from water and sediment and remobilizing it into stems. The work was conducted by sampling mangroves, associated species, sediment and water along 9 stations in riparian of Blanakan River, West Java. The stems of mangrove and associated species, water and sediments were analyzed for Zn content using AAS. The biodiversity was evaluated using Shannon-Wiener index (H’). The bioremobilization potential was calculated using Bioconcentration Factor (BCF). There were 3 true mangrove species (i.e. Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina, and Sonneratia caseolaris) and 3 mangrove associate species (i.e. Colocasia esculenta, Ipomoea aquatica, and Wedelia biflora). The H’ was ranging from 0.5 to 0.7. We found that the riparian with high species richness and biodiversity has less Zn contents both in water and sediments, while the riparian that has low species diversity has high Zn in water and sediments. All the mangrove and associated species have stored Zn in their stems with the most effective species in remobilizing Zn from water and sediment were C. esculenta, S. caseolaris, and R. mucronata. The contamination of Zn in aquatic ecosystem can be managed and reduced by increasing mangrove and associated species diversity and planting species that effective in remobilization of contaminants from environment.

Thallium (Tl) is an extremely harmful metal that is substantially distributed in the environment. It can threaten human health via consumption of food potentially derived from Tl-contaminated agricultural production. Little information is available on how to utilize biochar to remediate Tl contamination in agricultural soils. More efforts are urgently needed to be devoted to developing effective techniques to empower biochar with high selectivity of Tl in agricultural soils. In this review, we provided comprehensive information on Tl contamination in agricultural soils. We also discussed recent developments and assessed the current status of biochar applications. We briefly reviewed the bridge between biochar preparation technology and utilization wherein further developments can exhibit potential in terms of Tl remediation. Hence, biochar is expected to exhibit excellent Tl remediation performance in contaminated agricultural soils with promising application prospects. The obtained knowledge provides further insights into the remediation of Tl contamination in agricultural soils.
