Biocide leaching during field experiments on treated articles

Abstract: BackgroundBiocidal products can be sources of active substances in surface waters caused by weathering of treated articles. Marketing and use of biocidal products can be limited according to the European Biocidal Products Regulation if unacceptable risks to the environment are expected. Leaching of active substances from treated articles was observed in field experiments to obtain information on leaching processes and investigate the suitability of a proposed test method.ResultsLeaching under weathering condit… Show more

“…Despite the absence of agricultural land, one herbicide (diuron) and two insecticides (acetamiprid and cypermethrin) were found at trace levels (< 100 ng/L). Diuron has been banned in France since 2003 for agricultural use but is still used as a biocide, especially in paints and plaster of facades (Bester et al, 2011;Schoknecht et al, 2016).…”

“…Reports of the mass transfer of biocides from façade coatings into urban surface waters [93] spurred detailed investigation of biocide leaching from paints and renders. Studies of coatings were performed under laboratory conditions in either simple immersion tests [94,95] or weathering chambers [93,96], in field experiments [39,[97][98][99][100], and in settlement areas [93,101,102]. Most of the studies were performed on coatings containing polymeric organic binders, but some studies also included mineral products [103].…”

“…However, experiments under natural weathering conditions include additional, highly variable influencing factors that affect leaching. Therefore, the progression of emission curves from field studies is less consistent and less repeatable than the progression of emission curves from laboratory experiments [39,99,100,108]. UV radiation can cause the photodegradation of biocides [39,99].…”

“…The surface runoff that occurs following water saturation of the façade material is of special interest because leaching is controlled by the availability of water in the surface as well as the transport processes within the materials [27]. To model the runoff of the VTP, it is necessary to combine a variety of processes, e.g., WDR impingement in the vertical plane, material absorption, and surface runoff.…”
