Biocidal activity of polylactic acid-based nano-formulated abamectin on Acyrthosiphon pisum (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and the aphid predator Adalia bipunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

Abstract: Abamectin is a common biocide used to control agricultural insect pests. However, the water insolubility of abamectin may result in extra organic solvent introduced in the environment. To solve this issue, it is desirable to develop nanoformulations to encapsulate abamectin with environment-friendly polymers. In this study, two polylactic acid based abamectin nanoformulations were prepared. The average particle sizes, measured by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscope, were 240 nm and 15… Show more

“…In particular, the most significant increase in enzymatic activity was observed for MFOs, and we speculate that this may be closely related to the methoxy group (-OCH 3 ) of abamectin. Taken together, these observations suggest that resistance caused by biochemical metabolic pathways is closely associated with particular pest mite species characteristics, pesticide chemical structures, resistance levels, food quality, and environmental conditions (Shen et al, 2014;Sun et al, 2020;Verdu et al, 2015).…”

“…China is the primary abamectin manufacturer globally, and abamectin is also among the most commonly used bio-pesticides in China. Moreover, abamectin has been used in conjunction with the active ingredients of more than 30 pesticides, leading to the registration of over 1,000 mixed formulations (Sun et al, 2020;Xu et al, 2014). In addition to broad-spectrum activity and high-efficiency, abamectin also exhibits low residue potential and is safe for non-target organisms.…”

“…Corn-derived PLA is biodegradable, making it ideal for nutritional uses. According to the USFDA (United States Food and Drug Administration), the PLA has considered an entire safe status (GRAS) [ 115 ]. In 2010, PLA accounted for the enormous consumption volume globally compared to other bioplastics [ 116 ].…”

“…Other naturally occurring ones include cellulose, gelatin, pullulan, chitosan, alginate. Sun et al [141] stated that the nano-abamectin formula based on polylactic acid contributes to its solubility and leads to higher insecticidal activity against the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum). Furthermore, Barrera-Méndez et al [142] expressed that polymeric nanocarrier-based encapsulated pesticides exert an effective role in the release and good dispersion of these agrochemicals.…”
