“…The protist E. gracilis has a unique mitochondrion because it functions as a facultatively anaerobic organelle that produces ATP in the presence or absence of oxygen (Buetow, 1989). Euglena could represent a good model for a relic respiratory activity intermediate between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism (Nakazawa et al 2000) which would fit with preliminary evidence for a similar system in C. parvum (Coombs et al 1997 ;Entrala & Mascaro, 1997 pyruvate metabolism to that in the mitochondrion, remains to be functionally characterized and localized in C. parvum. Pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenase (PNT) is a key enzyme for the proton pump of the inner membrane and is associated with the generation of an electron gradient, and in E. histolytica, is thought to be associated with the mitosome (Weston et al 2001) while in E. tenella it has been localized to the refractile body of the sporozoite (Vermeulen et al 1993).…”
