“…In addition to being a high energy source, it also possesses growth-promoting factor(s) capable of stimulating the growth of mammalian cells (Shetty et al 1992b). Recent work from our laboratory has also revealed that the mitogenic activity of PM homogenates remains unaltered even on exposure to harsh denaturing conditions such as treatment with urea, dithiothreitol guanidine hydrochloride and trypsin, and that its specific activity of growth stimulation (aHthymidine incorporation-mg protein-1) is greater than that of cow, goat, buffalo and human milks (L. Bharathi and S.N.…”

“…It should be mentioned that the parent pigeons do not store PM at any time in their crop cavity and hence the samples had to be obtained (once a day) from freshly fed squabs. The time elapsed from parental feeding (by regurgitation) to surgical collection of PM was about 1-2 h. The collection was restricted to the first 5 days because beyond day 5 of secretion the PM is normally mixed with increasing proportion of grain (parent food) with the result that it is difficult to get it in pure form (Shetty et al 1992b). The samples collected on different days of secretion (contamination with grain, if any, was sorted by hand) were separately pooled and stored at -20 ~ until used.…”

“…Other important things to consider are that replacement clutches are common and also the time needed for completing a single clutch is relatively short. Both parents share incubation and chick development is quite fast, given the use of the energyrich cropmilk (Shetty et al, 1992). Moreover, pigeons can overlap clutches (Hetmanski & Wolk, 2005;Johnston & Janiga, 1995), which enables the clutch interval to be shortened, thereby increasing the number of clutches within a season.…”

“…Breeding season fluctuations have been debated extensively over the years (Lofts et al, 1966;Shotter, 1978;Shetty, 1992;Hetmański, 2004;Rose et al, 2006). The objective was to determine whether breeding on the campus's buildings took place all year round or indeed fluctuated seasonally.…”
