Biochemical Composition of Seston Reflecting the Physiological Status and Community Composition of Phytoplankton in a Temperate Coastal Embayment of Korea

Abstract: The biochemical composition of seston along a salinity gradient were examined in the low-turbidity, temperate, estuarine embayment, Gwangyang Bay in Korea. Seasonal variations in sestonic protein (PRT), carbohydrate (CHO), and lipid (LIP) concentrations were analyzed to assess the effects of physiological status and taxonomic composition of phytoplankton. The concentrations of biochemical compounds displayed a close relationship with chlorophyll a (Chla). PRT:CHO ratios were high (>1.0) in the estuarine cha… Show more

“…The maximum protein and lipid contents were detected in H2 during summer (152.38 and 4.24 mg/100 g wet wt., respectively). The elevation of water temperature enhanced the metabolic rate and induced an increase in some biochemical compounds especially protein and lipid contents because of the obvious thin pink bacterial film flourishing or the sediment can act as a trap for the de-attached cyanobacterial fragments and brine shrimp cyst (Bibi et al, 2021 ). Furthermore, strong positive significant correlations between protein and lipid with temperature were observed ( r = 0.0.9 and 0.6 at p > 0.05) (Table 4 ).…”

“…POM typically ranges in size from 0.5 µm to several millimeters, depending on the source and composition. It is often characterized by a complex chemical nature, including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids [43][44][45]. The reactivity of POM is influenced by its chemical structure and environmental conditions, which can affect its role in biogeochemical cycles and its interaction with pollutants [46][47][48][49].…”
