Biochemical characterization of β‐hexosaminidase in different biological specimens from eleven patients with GM2‐gangliosidosis B1 variant

Abstract: GM2-gangliosidosis B1 variant is thought to be a rare disorder with a wide geographical and ethnic distribution. We report the biochemical findings obtained in different specimens from a group of 11 B1 variant patients originating from the north of Portugal. The biochemical data obtained seem to indicate that only one of these patients is a genetic compound presenting a clinical and biochemical pattern similar to the majority of B1 variant patients described in the literature, but somewhat different from the p… Show more

“…1,16 This mutation has a wide ranging geographic and ethnic distribution, 16,17 although it has a particularly high incidence in northern Portugal, [18][19][20] and it has been suggested that it may have originated in this region. 16,18 In the Portuguese population as a whole, the prevalence of the B1 variant has been estimated as 0.84 per 100.000 live births, although this rate is nearly double for the northern part of the country.…”
