Biochemical characterization and identification of bacterial strains isolated from drinking water sources of Kohat, Pakistan

Abstract: SPE IPMAs the pure drinking water is inevitable for good health, it is necessary to evaluate it for bacterial contamination. This study was conducted on the different drinking water sources of Kohat, a Northern-Western District of Pakistan. Sampling was done from different drinking water sources including tap water, tube well water, home-well, bore-well and springs. Physiochemical analyses including pH, temperature, turbidity, total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity showed that all water samples wer… Show more

“…Resistant bacteria then adapt to environmental conditions and become vectors for transmission of antibiotic resistance 12 . Also, construction or industries effluents into aquatic ecosystem can affect the physical, chemical and biological properties of water bodies resulting in poor water quality that facilitates the evolution and transmission of resistance to environmental bacteria 14 . These pollutions are especially common in Klang River which covers the most densely populated areas in Malaysia including many hospitals, household areas, industries and constructions sites.…”

“…Sterilized media were poured into Petri plates, followed by spreading of concentrated water samples with the help of a sterilized loop. Petri plates were incubated at 35°C for 24 h (Also 48 hours to get the correct density) and 5 weeks for MTB, followed by sub-culturing of colonies on fresh selective media at 34°C and 36°C [14]. This step of colony sub-culturing was repeated 3 times for confirmation of the resultant colonies.…”
