Pork meat is one of the most important sources of animal protein in the human diet. Its nutritional properties are partly determined by intramuscular fat content and composition, with existing general consensus about the detrimental effects of cholesterol and saturated fat on cardiovascular health in humans. Because of their physiological resemblance, pigs can be also used as a valuable animal model to study the genetics of human diseases such as atherosclerosis, obesity and dyslipidaemias. Heritability estimates and QTL maps of porcine muscle and serum lipid traits evidence that a considerable amount of genetic variance determining these phenotypes exists, but its molecular basis remains mostly unknown. The recent advent of high-throughput genotyping and sequencing technologies has revolutionised the field of animal genomics. With these powerful tools, finding needles in the genomic haystack has become increasingly feasible. However, these methodological advances should not be deemed as magic bullets. The goal of identifying the many polymorphisms that shape the variability of lipid phenotypes is so challenging that success can be achieved only under the scope of large international consortia.

Summary A study on heritabilities for 20 biochemical and immunological blood parameters was performed based on blood samples from pigs at a performance testing station belonging to the Norwegian Pig Breeders' Association. The heritability estimates for the blood parameters varied considerably. Two blood parameters (FFA, LDH) had h2 lower than 0.1, six were in the range 0.1‐0.2 (ALB, AP, Ca, CK, Mg, TG), five between 0.2‐0.4 (ALAT, CHOL, CREAT, GGT, LYA), while estimated values for the remaining seven were greater than 0.4 (AMYL, ASAT, C3, GLOB, HCA, IgG, TPROT). The medium sized or high estimates of heritability for some of the blood parameters related to disease resistance, are encouraging as far as indirect selection are concerned, because of practical difficulties in recording of some diseases in pig herds. Further studies to reveal the genetic correlation between the blood parameters, and between blood parameters and disease resistance, meat quality or performance traits, should be performed. Zusammenfassung Biochemische Blutwerte bei Schweinen. 2. Heritabilitätswerte für 20 Blutparameter Die Untersuchung über die Heritabilität von 20 biochemischen und immunologischen Blutwerten wurde an Schweinen einer Prüfstation des Norwegischen Schweinezüchterverbandes durchgeführt. Die Heritabilitätsschätzwerte zeigten erhebliche Variabilität; zwei Werte (FFA; LDH) hatten Heritabilitätswerte unter 0.1, sechs im Bereich von 0.1 bis 0.2 (ALB; AP; CA; CK; MG; TG); fünf zwischen 0.2 und 0.4 (ALAT; CHOL; CREAT; GGT; LYS) während bei den restlichen sieben sie über 0.4 lagen (AMYL; ASAT; C3; GLOB; HCA; IgG; PROT). Die mittleren bzw. hohen Heritabilitätsschätzwerte für einige Blutwerte, die in Verbindung mit Krankheitsresistenz sein könnten, sollten im Bezug auf indirekte Selektion ermutigend sein, vor allem da die Schwierigkeiten der Krankheitserfassung in Schweineherden erheblich sind. Weitere Untersuchungen hinsichtlich der genetischen Korrelation zwischen Blutwerten und zwischen diesen und Krankheitsresistenz, Fleischqualität‐ und leistungen sollten durchgeführt werden.

Effect of Breed, Heterosis and Sex on Body Weight, and Glutathione Peroxidase Activities in Red Blood Cell Haemolysate and Blood Plasma at the Age of Sexual Maturity in Chickens

The purpose of the present study was to collect information about the possible genetic background of glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activity in four pure breeds and their crosses of chickens, and its correlation with body weight (BW) and studying the e ect of cross-breeding and sex on GSHPx activity. Blood samples were collected from six breeds of chickens, New Hampshire (NH), Naked Neck Plymouth (NNP) and their cross (NH NNP), White Plymouth Rock (WPR), Naked Neck New Hampshire (NNNH) and their cross (WPR NNNH) at the age of sexual maturity. GSHPx activity measured in blood plasma (BP) and red blood cell haemolysate (RBC). Results showed that there were significant di erences in BW and GSHPx activities in RBC and BP among genetic groups and their crosses. NNP had the highest average BW ( . kg) and NH had the lowest ( . kg). WPR had the highest RBC GSHPx activity ( . U/g protein) and NH NNP cross had the lowest ( . U/g protein). WPR NNNH had the highest BP GSHPx activity ( . U/g protein) and NNNH had the lowest ( . U/g protein). Crosses had intermediate values for BW compared to their parents. The two crosses had lower RBC GSHPx activity than their parent breeds. NH NNP had lower BP GSHPx activity than their parent breeds while WPR NNNH had higher values. Sex had significant e ect on BW and GSHPx activity in RBC and BP, males had higher values than females for BW and BP GSHPx activity while the opposite was found in RBC GSHPx activity. Heterosis as a percentage of the midparent values of the GSHPx activities in RBC and BP also average BW has high values and a ected by sex. Significant negative correlation was found between BW and RBC GSHPx activity ( . ;. ) while, positive correlation was found between BW and BP GSHPx activity.
