Global warming and the subsequent increase in the frequency of temperature anomalies are expected to affect marine and estuarine species’ population dynamics, latitudinal distribution, and fitness, allowing non-native opportunistic species to invade and thrive in new geographical areas. Bivalves represent a significant percentage of the benthic biomass in marine ecosystems worldwide, often with commercial interest, while mediating fundamental ecological processes. To understand how these temperature anomalies contribute to the success (or not) of biological invasions, two closely related species, the native Ruditapes decussatus and the introduced R. philippinarum, were exposed to a simulated heat wave. Organisms of both species were exposed to mean summer temperature (~18 °C) for 6 days, followed by 6 days of simulated heat wave conditions (~22 °C). Both species were analysed for key ecological processes such as bioturbation and nutrient generation—which are significant proxies for benthic function and habitat quality—and subcellular biomarkers—oxidative stress and damage, and energetic metabolism. Results showed subcellular responses to heat waves. However, such responses were not expressed at the addressed ecological levels. The subcellular responses to the heat wave in the invasive R. philippinarum pinpoint less damage and higher cellular energy allocation to cope with thermal stress, which may further improve its fitness and thus invasiveness behaviour.

Earthworms play important roles in terrestrial ecosystems including evaluating the health status of the soil in environmental studies. Its regulation and detoxifi cation of metallic metals and the non-essential metal ion are associated with the possession of Metallothioneins (MTs). Three isoforms of MTs are induced in some species of earthworms under stress in the soil; wMT1, wMT2, and wMT3 (found in cocoons). Though reports on the nucleotide sequences, mechanisms of action and entire functions of two earthworm MTs isoforms exist, the precise mechanism of action and entire functions of wMT3 are still obscure. Metals and stress are known inducers of MTs in earthworms. In recent times, Contaminants of Emerging Concerns (CECs) and the advent of nanotechnology has occasioned a handful of studies evaluating their effect in the environment using biomarkers like metallothioneins. More research focusing on CECs' and nanoparticles' ecotoxicological impact in the environment by monitoring biomarkers like earthworm metallothioneins is encouraged. The detection and quantifi cation of MTs involve a wide array of techniques including analytical, instrumentation and molecular analyses which remains the most commonly used. This review evaluates the various methods and highlights their pros and cons.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the combined effects of seasonality and anthropogenic pressure on a battery of oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, DNA damage and histological alterations in the native clam Ruditapes decussatus collected from a less contaminated area (LCA), Ghar El Melh, a moderately contaminated area (MCA), the North Lake, and a highly contaminated area (HCA), the South Lake, all located in the southern Mediterranean Sea. The accumulation of cadmium, lead, copper, iron and zinc was higher in the digestive glandsof clams collected from the MCA and the HCAthan in those from the LCA, particularly during the warm season. Our results reveal that metallothionein, lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation levels and antioxidant defence systems were higher, while acetylcholinesterase activity was lower, in clams from the MCAand HCAthan in those from the LCA. The results also indicate that clams from the MCA and the HCAare characterized by histological alterations and DNA damage. In conclusion, the evident changes of antioxidant defence systems and macromolecules between the studied lagoons reveal the perturbation of the physiological states of clams from polluted sites thatcope with seasonal changes and trace element accumulations.
