Biochemical and enzymatic changes after black scorpion Heterometrus fastigiousus Couzijn envenomation in experimental albino mice

Abstract: The toxic effects of Asian black scorpion Heterometrus fastigiousus (Family, Scorpionidae) venom were determined in albino mice (NIH strain). Venom was isolated and fractioned by Sepharose CL-6B column chromatography. The toxicity of fractioned venom was determined in albino mice by subcutaneous envenomation. The LD(50) of venom was found to be 15 mg kg(-1) body weight and range of molecular weight of venom proteins responsible for toxicity was found from 9.5-63 kDs. The effects of fractioned venom on differen… Show more

“…In our hospital, capillary glycemia at admission is part of the standard care in the emergency department. The presence of hyperglycemia and hypokalemia may suggest a dysregulation of insulin or sodium-glucose cotransporters, and Na/K exchange pumps, as described with other scorpions [ 44 ]. Other blood analysis abnormalities might be related to cholinergic pathway activation with hypersecretory action including pancreatic enzymes.…”

“…Thirty-six hours after the last treatment, orbital blood samples were obtained under light ether anesthesia using heparinized microcapillaries for the estimation of biomarkers lactate dehydrogenase (LDH),[13] creatinine phosphokinase (CPK)[14] and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). [15] Both control and treated animals were observed for 3 weeks after the last injection for general appearance, behavior and mortality.…”

“…Purified toxins/proteins from tick saliva were determined by running proteins of known molecular weight through a sepharose CL-6B gel column as previously performed in the laboratory same flow rate. A calibration curve was plotted between Ve/Vo log M between elution volume fractions and molecular weights of different known proteins and compared with protein elution from salivary proteins/toxins Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus at the same flow rate and in the same fraction (Chaubey and Upadhyay, 2008).…”
