Biochemical and Biological Properties of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin K

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogen which is implicated in a wide variety of diseases. Major determinants of the virulence of this organism include extracellular virulence factors. Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are important causative agents in staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome and food poisoning. Our study identified a novel enterotoxin, SEK, and examined its biochemical and biological properties. SEK had a molecular weight of 26,000 and an experimentally determined pI of between 7.0 an… Show more

“…aureus secrets several types of enterotoxins (SEs) which are responsible for causing food poisoning. Different SE serological types have been recognized and designated as SEA, SEB, SEC, SED, SEE, SEG, SHE, SEI and SEJ [1], [6], [7], [10]- [12], [15]. The toxins are superantigens which have the ability to induce diarrhea when ingested [16], [17].…”

“…The staphylococcal enterotoxins are considered superantigens, characterized by simultaneous connections to the major complex of histocompatibility class II in an antigen presenting cell and T cell receptors, without the presence of Recently, several other toxins have been described and their genes have been sequenced, known as SEK, SEL, SEM, SEN, SEO, SEP, SEQ, SER and SEU (8,11,14,21,22,23). Besides SEH, SEI and SEG, which present emetic activity (17,30) …”

“…The percentage of isolates producing enterotoxin type A was low. Currently, more than 20 types of staphylococcal enterotoxins are known (Balaban and Rasooly, 2000;Pereira et al, 1991;Munson et al, 1998;Orwin et al, 2001;Omoe et al, 2005;Thomas et al, 2006;Ono et al, 2008). However, enterotoxin A is the most commonly staphylococcal enterotoxin associated with foodborne outbreaks, followed by enterotoxin D (Balaban and Rasooly, 2000).…”
