BioCartilage Improves Cartilage Repair Compared With Microfracture Alone in an Equine Model of Full-Thickness Cartilage Loss

Abstract: The 1-year results of BioCartilage + PRP suggest that homologous allograft tissue provides a safe and effective augmentation of traditional MFx.

“…The addition of a micronized allogeneic cartilage scaffold has been shown to yield higher rates of hyaline cartilage formation in animal studies when compared with microfracture alone. 6,16 Our expectation is that a minimally invasive technique that promotes the formation of a more hyaline-like cartilage may result in a more durable surface and subsequent superior long-term results. 6 To date, no results are available on arthroscopic debridement, drilling, and supplementation of BioCartilage, 6 and further clinical studies will be needed to determine the long-term efficacy of this technique.…”

“…In addition, PRP has been used to augment the surgical management of articular cartilage defects, with encouraging preclinical results reported. 66,96,97 For this augmented procedure, a commercially available biologic scaffold of micronized allograft articular cartilage matrix is aug-mented with PRP and placed in the defect bed after microfracture to induce type II hyaline cartilage rather than the type I fibrocartilage typically produced via traditional marrow stimulation techniques.…”

“…It contains an allogeneic extracellular matrix and includes type II collagen, proteoglycans, and cartilaginous growth factors. Fortier et al [87] reported that BioCartilage with PRP safely improved cartilage repair compared with microfracture alone in an equine model with up to 13 months of follow-up. In clinical studies, Desai et al [88] reported a case series of nine patients with an average lesion size of 132 mm 2 .…”
