Biocapacity in the Gili Matra Region: A Spatial Assessment of The Carrying Capacity of Small Islands

Abstract: Spatial as a contributor to biological productivity and ecosystem services have not been considered in the sustainable development of small islands. The aim of this study to appraise biocapacity (BC) in the Gili Matra Islands to estimate the existing carrying capacity for sustainable development, and refines the current BC methodology that emphasizes the spatial aspects in small islands. Based on analysis results, the Gili Matra Islands have BC total ranging from 659.46 to 1,069.57 gha in 2010, and increased f… Show more

“…Tourism generates IDR 1,102,165,479/year and is assumed to grow exponentially each year [16]. The negative impact of tourism on the biophysical capacity of the coral reef ecosystem in the GMMTP has been widely discussed in the science community [13,14,44,48,49]. Some coral reef areas with high biodiversity values in GMMTP are threatened with decline due to tourism overcapacity.…”

“…However, island resources and environments are very fragile (Douglas, 2006), and those limited resources are vulnerable to environmental damage (Lovelock et al, 2010) from tourism development (Cullen-Unsworth et al, 2014;Kurniawan et al, 2019). Therefore, the discussion of resources, environment, and tourism activities have been an important management issue for island tourism development (Kurniawan et al, 2017(Kurniawan et al, , 2019Mai and Smith, 2018).…”
