Biobased chain extended polyurethane and its composites with silk fiber

Abstract: The biobased chain extended polyurethane (PU) was synthesized by reacting castor oil based polyol with different diisocyanates [toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI)] and chain extender such as glutaric acid. Biocomposites have been fabricated by incorporating the silk fiber into both TDIand HMDI-based PUs. The effect of incorporation of silk fiber into TDI-and HMDI-based neat PU on the physicomechanical properties such as density, surface hardness, tensile strength, and percenta… Show more

“…Moreover, the glass transition temperature of the resulting composites increases with silk fibers. [76] Macroporous composites based on a castor oil polyurethane and collagen have been successfully prepared as well. [77] The presence of collagen improves the hydrophilicity of the composites and these composites may have potential biomedical applications.…”

“…Degumming of crude RBO with varying enzyme (Lecitase Ultra) dosage was studied by Manjula et al (2010). In the experiments, 1250 units/kg oil enzyme dosage (Lecitase Ultra) achieved 67 mg/kg phosphorus in the degummed oil from an initial level of 390 mg/kg in crude RBO.…”

“…Lesser decrease in phosphorus content, higher deterioration of color, higher formation of FFA, and lesser residual gums formation were observed. Acid and enzymatic degummingManjula et al 2010 In the experiments, 1250 units/kg oil enzyme dosage (Lecitase Ultra) achieved 67 mg/kg phosphorus in the degummed oil from an initial level of 390 mg/kg in crude RBO. When the dosage was increased to 2520 units/kg oil, the phosphorus content reduced to 10 mg/kg, whereas the residual phosphorus in the control run without the enzyme addition was 85 mg/kg.…”

“…In this context, the glycerin can be employed for the production of resins, such as polyurethanes. The polyurethanes (PU) are one of the most important polymeric materials, showing different characteristics and applications [4][5][6] . Among the variety of applications, PUs can be employed as oil spill cleanup agents from aqueous systems [7][8][9] , which is a major concern since petroleum use always involves a considerable risk of oil spillage [10,11] that could occur during its transportation and storage [12] .…”
