Biobanking for Translational Diabetes Research in India

Abstract: India is declared as the diabetic capital of the world. Clinically well-annotated blood samples will advance diabetes research for better diagnostic and treatment methods. Building a disease-specific biobank with highquality peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and clinical follow-up data system will serve as a good platform for clinical research in diabetes. Processing and storage of high-quality biospecimen for translational research in diabetes demand the implementation of good clinical laboratory pra… Show more

“…India has developed biobanks for diseases, such as cancer, brain disorders and liver diseases, but a biobank for diabetes research is lacking, and there is limited spare capacity beyond the needs of studies that receive funding to set them up. 128 Integration of such biobanks with electronic health records may provide an avenue for novel insights into disease etiology among Indians. This requires an extensive effort for transdisciplinary research and collaboration across medical and basic biological institutions.…”
