Bioactivity of a flavanol‐rich lychee fruit extract in adipocytes and its effects on oxidant defense and indices of metabolic syndrome in animal models

Abstract: Many polyphenolic compounds are poorly digested, and have low bioavailability due to their long chain lengths and chemical composition. A processed, flavanol-rich lychee fruit extract (FRLFE) that is higher in flavanol monomers, dimer and trimers than its unprocessed counterpart, was tested in a variety of models. First, mature visceral adipocytes were treated with 0, 3, 10 or 30 microg/mL FRLFE (day 6-8). Compared with the controls, the treated cells had lower triglyceride concentrations, less lipid accumulat… Show more

“…FRLFE (Oligonol ® , Amino Up Chemical Co., Ltd, Sapporo Japan) was used in this study. FRLFE contained 16.3% monomers [8.2% (+)‐catechin and (–)‐epicatechin; 2.1% epicatechin gallate; 6% EGCG], 13.8% dimers [5% procyanidin A2; 4.1% procyanidin A1; 3.1% procyanidin B2; 1.6% other dimers], 3.8% trimers and 58.6% larger proanthocyanidins (Kalgaonkar et al , ; Miura et al , ). Each FRLFE capsule contained FRLFE (50 mg) and dextrin (150 mg).…”

“…Lychee is one such plant that claims to possess liver tonic activity, hence, was selected with the aim of establishing a scientific basis for its traditional claim. The plant has already been investigated for its nutritive composition (Wu et al, 2009;Kalgaonkar et al, 2010), anti-inflammatory (Besra et al, 1996) and antioxidant (Yang et al, 2006;Li and Jiang, 2007;Sakurai et al, 2008;Kong et al, 2010) activities. It has one of the highest reported polyphenol concentrations of any fruit (Brat et al, 2006).…”
