Bioactivity-guided isolation of anti-proliferative compounds from endemic Centaurea kilaea

Abstract: Context: The genus Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) is one of the largest genera in Turkey. Compounds and extracts obtained from different Centaurea species have significant anti-cancer activity against various cancer cell lines. Objective: To determine the anti-proliferative activity of isolates from the chloroform extract of C. kilaea Boiss.Materials and methods: Eleven compounds were isolated using column chromatography and preparative TLC from the chloroform extract of aerial parts of endemic C. kilaea. The struct… Show more

“…Salvigenin, eupatorin, and cirsimaritin were isolated from Centaurea kilaea (Asteraceae) in a bioassay-guided purification procedure against two cancerous cell lines; MCF-7 and PC-3; a prostate adenocarcinoma cell line. Only the two later compounds showed potent cytotoxic effect against PC-3 [27,28]. Quercetin alone or in combination with topotecan showed significant cytotoxicity against the MCF-7 cell lines [29].…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, C. pseudosinaica has not been previously evaluated for its phytochemical constituents. All three coumarins were isolated in good yield and have been reported to exhibit anti-microbial and antiproliferative activities [9,10]. Likewise, Santin from T. auriculatum, a steroids (estradiol) and a triterpene (β-amyrin) from K. linearis were isolated, characterized and exhibited antioxidant, neuroprotection, anti-ulcer and antimicrobial activities [13,14].…”
