Bioactive properties of medicinal plants from the Algerian flora: Selecting the species with the highest potential in view of application purposes

Abstract: The Algerian flora contains a wide variety of plant species with potential to be used in medicinal applications. Herein, the bioactive properties of medicinal plants from Algeria were evaluated to select the species with highest suitability to be used under specific purposes, while scientifically validating their health claims. The antioxidant activity of the infusions was screened by using several tests and cytotoxic properties were evaluated against human guyonianum and A. graveolens would be the most suitab… Show more

“…This extract did not demonstrate cytotoxicity in PLP2 cell lines (GI 50 > 400 µg/ mL). These results are in agreement with the work presented by Ziani et al (2015), which studied the bioactive properties of infusions prepared from A. unedo flowers and leaves (rich in phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, especially flavonols and phenolic acid esters), describing the absence of cytotoxic effects.…”

“…The Algerian Sahara has a rich and prestigious heritage of plantbased medicines (Benarba, 2016) and many species are used in traditional phytotherapy, which contributed for the development of new therapeutic pathways (Benarba, 2016;Ziani et al, 2015). Ammodaucus levels of total phenols and flavonoids in the polar organic extracts (ethanolic, methanolic and acetone extracts) of A. leucotrichus from Bechar-Algeria.…”

“…The sulforhodamine B assay was performed as previously described. 19 Results were expressed as GI 50 values (sample concentration that inhibited 50% of the net cell growth) in mg mL −1 .…”

“…A cell culture (PLP2) was prepared from a freshly harvested porcine liver obtained from a local slaughter house and cultured as previously described. 19 Before confluence was reached, cells were subcultured and plated in 96-well plates (≈1.0 × 10 4 cells per well), using DMEM with 10% FBS, 100 U mL −1 penicillin and 100 μg mL −1 streptomycin. Results were expressed as GI 50 values, in mg mL −1 .…”
