Bioactive properties, fatty acid compositions, and phenolic compounds of some date palm (Phoenix dactyliferaL.) cultivars

Abstract: The antioxidant activity values and total phenol contents of date flesh samples changed between 6.61 (Osailah)–10.72% (Rothanh Qassim) and 50.64 (Osailah)–98.61 mgGAE/100 g (Rothanh Qassim), respectively. Hence cultivars showed significant (p ˂ .05) variations. Among phenolic compounds, gallic acid contents of date flesh varied between 1.61 (Sbakah) and 11.23 mg/100 g (Rushudiah), 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid between 0.30 (Rushudiah) and 2.68 mg/100 g (Rothanh Qassim), and (+)‐catechin between 0.29 (Osailah) and … Show more

“…Table 3 Previous research based on the biochemical composition of some Tunisian date palms also revealed signifcant differences between cultivars [27]. Te total phenolic concentration in this study difered from that of the Saoudian cultivars, which ranged from 50.64 ± 0.03 mg•GAE/100 g to 98.61 ± 0.03 mg•GAE/100 g [28] and difered also from those observed by Chaira et al [29] who showed that the phenol amount in some Tunisian date cultivars was lower than 9.70 mgGAE/100 g•FW. Tese fndings were in line with those reported by Alam et al [30], who found that the phenol content varied from 46 to 397 mg•GAE/100 g•FW using the Folin-Ciocalteu technique.…”

“…Fatty acids play a crucial role in various physiological functions in the human body, including energy storage, cell membrane structure, and signaling [35]. The fatty acid composition of the date palm varies depending on the cultivar, geographic location, and maturity stage of the fruit [36]. The major fatty acids present in the date palm include palmitic acid (C16:0), oleic acid (C18:1), linoleic acid (C18:2), and stearic acid (C18:0) [37].…”

“…The date fruit is a rich source of phenolic compounds that possess biological activity due to the presence of a benzene hydroxyl ring with a carboxyl group [58]. The date fruit contains a range of phenolic compounds, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, and highmolecular-weight compact polymers [3,36]. There are four primary categories of phenolic compounds found in plants, namely phenolic acids, flavonoids, stilbene, and lignin.…”
