Bioactive Polyphenols from the Methanol Extract ofCnicus arvensis(L.) Roth Demonstrated Antinociceptive and Central Nervous System Depressant Activities in Mice

Abstract: Cnicus arvensis is used by many ethnic groups for inflammation, pain, and other ailments. In this study, reducing sugar, carbohydrate, alkaloid, steroid, tannin, flavonoid, and saponin groups were identified using standard chromogenic method. In high-performance liquid chromatography, vanillic acid and epicatechin were identified in the extract. Antinociceptive test by acetic acid induced writhing inhibition resulted 43.17 and 95.08% inhibition for 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight, comparing with standard diclofe… Show more

“…The obtained filtrate was concentrated at low temperature (4°C) and reduced pressure using a rotary vacuum evaporator (R-210, Buchi, Switzerland) and dried. The gummy concentrate of 10 g (4.35% yield) was obtained and designated as crude methanol extract of V. orientale leaves (MEVOL) ( Rahman et al, 2015b ). The extract was then freeze-dried with Savant Refrigerated Vapor Trap and preserved in refrigerator for further work in future.…”

“…Polyphenols have also been implicated in many other chronic conditions such as Parkinson disease, Alzheimer's disease, antinociceptive, immune response, malignancy, anticalcification, hypertension, health and development, etc. Srinivasan and Lahiri 2015;Rahman et al 2015;Magrone and Jirillo 2015;Signorelli et al 2015;Wang et al 2015;Teles et al 2015;Ly et al 2015). There is a plethora of information that reflects on the fact that activities of green tea polyphenolic compounds can control chronic diseases that are mediated through persistent inflammation.…”

“…Vanillic acid is a phenolic acid with formula C 8 H 8 O 4 , found in some forms of vanilla and many other plant extracts. It is reported to possess strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and neuroprotective effects [37][38][39][40]. It has also been proved that vanillic acid has hepatoprotective effect, and is often used in the treatment of depression in TCM, and can suppress hepatic fibrosis in chronic liver injury [41].…”
