Bioactive polyphenol profiling and in-vitro antioxidant activity of Tinospora cordifolia Miers ex Hook F and Thoms : A potential ingredient for functional food development

Abstract: Antioxidant activities and specific bioactive polyphenol content of methanol and ethanol extracts of the stem of Tinospora cordifolia Miers were evaluated in the present investigation. Phenolic compounds were identified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Results revealed that absolute methanol extract had the lower IC50 value. DPPH (1, 1-Diphenyl-2-Picryl Hydrazyl) was scavenged 50% by 9.36±1.75 mg/ml methanol extract. Flavonoid, tannin and phenolic contents were found comparatively higher in me… Show more

“…In addition, ImmuPlus ® is composed of the following plant parts: Tinospora cordifolia , Ocimum sanctum , Whitania somnifera , Andrographis paniculata, and Azadirachta indica . T. cordifolia contains 20.4% tannins and 2.19% flavonoids for antioxidant activity [ 59 ]; O. sanctum contains essential oils (24.15% camphor, 23.67% eugenol, and 13.47% eucalyptol) with antimicrobial properties [ 7 ]; W. somnifera contains flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids with antimicrobial and antifungal properties [ 60 ]; A. paniculata contains 8.06% flavonoids and 10.22% essential oils with immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties [ 8 , 61 ]; A. indica contains tannins, flavonoids, and essential oils with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity [ 62 ].…”

“…The wide-spectrum therapeutic activities of T. cordiofolia are due to the presence of numerous key bioactive compounds. T. cordiofolia was shown to be responsible for five phyto-constituents out of ten in the current investigation, these are gallic acid, magnoflorine, rutin, β-ecdysone and rosmarinic acid [ 22 24 ]. Aloe barbadensis or Aloe vera, has been classically used for skin disorders.…”

“…Furthermore, some other important polyphenols were also present in the extracts. These bioactive mixes are acknowledged for their oxide reduction properties (Diep et al, 2020;Khan et al, 2020;Št'astná et al, 2019), which might assume a momentous role in the mopping up of ROS and resultant antioxidant activity. The phenolic hydroxyl groups of polyphenol compounds act as hydrogen donors to directly react with radicals and reduce the activities of…”
