Ethnic value of many known plants are underexploited for medicinal application besides their proven traditional qualities. One such plant known for wound healing is Tridax procumbens. This plant has wound healing property and is commercially unexploited. Silver nanoparticle (Ag-NP) were synthesized using this plant extracts using different solvents (methanol, ethyl acetate and aqueous), which exhibit resonance at 426, 424 and 418 nm, respectively. This plant-mediated Ag-NPs have strong anti-bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pyogenes, Klebsiella pneumonia, Serratia marcescens and Bacillus subtilis with methanol extract. Further instance, elemental composition was confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and particle size ranges were observed at 80-200 nm with spherical shape nanoparticles by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The biocompatibility of Ag-NPs was assessed using fibroblast cell line (L929) by MTT assay with 109.35 µg IC 50 value. The oxygen plasma treated and non-treated bamboo spunlaced nonwoven fabrics were coated with the Ag-NPs by exhaust method. Contact angle and water retention revealed significant difference in absorption ability of plasma treated fabric. Field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of Ag-NPs in plasma coated fabrics. The fabricated cloth was studied for anti-microbial and microbial penetration ability.

Antileishmanial activity of a mixture ofTridax procumbensandAllium sativumin mice

We tested a mixture of Tridax procumbens, known for its direct action against Leishmania mexicana, and Allium sativum, known for its immunomodulatory effect, as an alternative to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis. Acute oral toxicity was tested with the Up-and-Down Procedure (UDP) using a group of healthy mice administered with either T. procumbens or A. sativum extracts and compared with a control group. Liver injury and other parameters of toxicity were determined in mice at day 14. The in vivo assay was performed with mice infected with L. mexicana promastigotes and treated with either a mixture of T. procumbens and A. sativum or each extract separately. The thickness of the mice’s footpads was measured weekly. After the 12-week period of infection, blood samples were obtained by cardiac puncture to determine the total IgG, IgG1 and IgG2a immunoglobulins by a noncommercial indirect ELISA. We showed that the mixture of T. procumbens and A. sativum extracts was better at controlling L. mexicana infection while not being toxic when tested in the acute oral toxicity assay in mice. An increase in the ratio of IgG2a/IgG1 indicated a tendency to raise a Th1-type immune response in mice treated with the mixture. The mixture of T. procumbens and A. sativum extracts is a promising natural treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis and its healing effects make it a good candidate for a possible new phytomedicine.

Tridax procumbens (T. procumbens) Linn. is a medicinal plant found in tropical, subtropical and mild temperate regions around the world being used in Ayurveda treatment for liver disorders, boils, blisters, cuts, wound healing and as an anticoagulant, antifungal, and insect repellent. The plant is known to contain flavonoids, alkaloids, carotenoids, hydroxycinnamates, lignans, benzoic acid derivatives, phytosterols and tannins. The plant is also associated with endophytes to produce secondary metabolies by endophytes possessing antibacterial and antifungal activities. Different parts of this plant and essential oil are associated with ethnopharmacological properties like wound healing, antibacterial, immunomodulation, antiinflammatory, antidiabetic, vasorelaxant, antihyperlipidemic, anticancer, antiplasmodial, anticoagulation and antihepatic. Most of these studies validate the concept of earlier claims that T. procumbens's potential as a medicinal plant. Further studies are required to unravel other pharmacological activities as well as the target-based mechanism of actions. The review also highlights the need for exploring lead molecules from these myriad of compounds that are of vital importance in drug discovery strategies.
