Bioactive Constituents from the Rhizomes of Sansevieria cylindrica

Abstract: Analysis of the MeOH extract of rhizomes of Sansevieria cylindrica using repeated silica gel and reversed-phase chromatographic separations led to the isolation of ten known phenolic compounds (1-10) belonging to five different classes. Their structures, including the absolute configuration, were identified by NMR and CD spectra analysis. The antiradical activity of isolated compounds was screened using the DPPH scavenging method. The cytotoxic effects were assayed against a Hela cell line. Compounds 2-10 have… Show more

“…Molecules 2020, 25, x FOR PEER REVIEW 17 of 27 compound led to a revision of the structure. In fact, the correct structure corresponds to that of compound 125 (Figure 20), that is the enantiomer of homoisoflavanone 119 isolated from S. cylindrica [82,83]. 21), from the EtOAc soluble fraction of a methanol extract of S. trifasciata [87].…”

“…This compound exhibited significant DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 35.2 μg/mL), that was comparable with that of ascorbic acid (IC50 33.3 μg/mL) [81]. Phytochemical investigations of S. cylindrica rhizomes, collected in Myanmar, revealed the presence of (-)-(8R)trifasciatine C (115 ≡ ent-114), homoisoflavanones (-)-(3R)-trifasciatine A (126), (+)-trifasciatine B (116), compounds 117-120 (Figure 19), and (-)-cambodianol (20) [30], along with the furanoflavones lanceolatin B (121) and pongaglabol methyl ether (122), the flavone de(s)methoxy-kanugin (123), and the pterocarpan (-)-(6aR, 11aR)-homopterocarpin (124) [82,83]. Compounds 115, 116-120 displayed weak radical scavenging activity in the DPPH test (EC50 values > 100 mM) [82].…”

“…The plant used in the study was a Sansevieria cylindrica, also known as Dracaena angolensis and commonly named Sansevieria. It is a Crassulaceae plant native to subtropical African regions, belonging to the genus Dracaena (Family Asparagaceae) [33]. It is an ornamental plant as it is very easy to cultivate and take care of indoors if given bright light and a moderate amount of water being a drought-tolerant species.…”

“…The nitric oxide (NO) production inhibitory capability of these aromatics was assessed in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced murine RAW264.7 macrophage model as we described formerly [23]. [22], the 1 H NMR data (Table 1) for 1 also revealed the existence of an amyloxy group at H 4.12 (t, J = 6.8 Hz, 2H), 1.65 (m, 2H), 1.33 (m, 4H) and 0.90 (t, J = 6.8 Hz, 3H). Analysis of the 13 C NMR data (Table 1) also confirmed the aforementioned assignments with typical signals for the Zferuloyl and amyloxy fragments, and the two fragments were connected via an ester bond as evidenced by the chemical shift of H2-1 (H 4.12) and its HMBC correlation (Fig.…”
