Bioactive Compounds of Dietary Origin and Their Influence on Colorectal Cancer as Chemoprevention

Paulina Delgado-Gonzalez,
Elsa N. Garza-Treviño,
David A. de la Garza Kalife
et al.

Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common causes of death and the third most diagnosed cancer worldwide. The tumor microenvironment and cancer stem cells participate in colorectal tumor progression and can dictate malignancy. Nutrition status affects treatment response and the progression or recurrence of the tumor. This review summarizes the main bioactive compounds against the molecular pathways related to colorectal carcinogenesis. Moreover, we focus on the compounds with chemopreventive properties,… Show more

“…Cancer metastasis represents one of the most challenging aspects of cancer progression, often leading to poor prognostic outcomes [94] and bioactive compounds have emerged as potential agents in suppressing metastasis, acting through various cellular mechanisms to inhibit the spread and colonization of cancer cells in distant organs. [95] β-carbolines have exhibited antimetastatic effects by inhibiting processes involved in cancer cell migration, invasion, and metastasis (Miao et al, 2021;Ding et al, 2019). They can reduce the activity of proteins associated with metastasis, such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and interfere with signaling pathways involved in cell motility and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).…”

“…There have been investigations of effective phytochemicals inhibiting cancer signaling pathways. Consequently, the scientific and medical communities are very interested in the bioactivities of natural phytochemicals and their potential to prevent cancer [24,25]. A wide range of potential chemopreventive bioactives is being studied.…”

“…The use of nutritional/dietary supplements (e.g., calcium, vitamin D, folate, phytochemicals, n-3 PUFAs, etc.) or pharmacologically active compounds (re-purposed drugs-e.g., aspirin) are ranked among the most applied CRC prevention strategies [2,8,9].…”
