Bioactive Compounds Isolated from Microalgae in Chronic Inflammation and Cancer

Abstract: The risk of onset of cancer is influenced by poorly controlled chronic inflammatory processes. Inflammatory diseases related to cancer development include inflammatory bowel disease, which can lead to colon cancer, or actinic keratosis, associated with chronic exposure to ultraviolet light, which can progress to squamous cell carcinoma. Chronic inflammatory states expose these patients to a number of signals with tumorigenic effects, including nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase… Show more

“…Other anti‐oxidants include lutein, vitamins, proteins and peptides, polyketides, phycobilins, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and phenolic compounds . They are produced by algae in larger amounts when certain stress conditions are present to protect the cells from oxidative stress that generates hydrogen peroxide and oxygen derived free radicals, which cause damage to the cellular systems.…”

“…Cancer research has been mainly focused on the search for curative treatments, and few studies have aimed to develop preventive strategies that can be useful in the long period of carcinogenesis of the tumors. This period is suitable for employing chemopreventive strategies based on the use of natural, synthetic or biological substances to reduce the risk of developing a cancer (Talero et al, 2015). In this regard, the exploration of compounds from natural sources with health effects with the aim of developing a new functional food or nutraceutical is an intense field of research.…”
