Bio-therapeutic Potential and Cytotoxicity Assessment of Pectin-Mediated Synthesized Nanostructured Cerium Oxide

Abstract: In the present studies, renewable and nontoxic biopolymer, pectin, was extracted from Indian red pomelo fruit peels and used for the synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO-NPs) having bio-therapeutic potential. The structural information of extracted pectin was investigated by FTIR and NMR spectroscopic techniques. Physicochemical characteristics of this pectin suggested its application in the synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles. Using this pectin as a template, CeO-NPs were synthesized by simple, one… Show more

“…Of the 17 evaluated studies of CeNP antimicrobial activity ( Table 1 ), seven used the principle of green chemistry with extracts of plants, fruits, and fungi [ 13 , 14 , 17 , 20 23 ]. The green synthesis route is considered important because it is nontoxic and of low cost and decreases the use of substances that are harmful to human health and the environment [ 14 , 22 ].…”

“…These alternative procedures include plant‐mediated, fungus‐mediated, nutrient‐mediated, and biopolymer‐mediated synthesis . For example, Patil et al synthesized CeO 2 nanoparticles in presence of pectin, extracted from Indian red pomelo fruit peels, that acts as a reducing agent during the reaction . The obtained cerium oxide nanoparticles have a diameter ≤ 40 nm, with good antioxidant activity …”

“…Polymer-mediated synthesis approach has also been taken by some researchers to synthesize nanoceria [ 64 67 ]. For example, Patil et al [ 68 ] used cerium nitrate, pectin, and ammonia solution as precursors to synthesize nanoceria. The synthesized nanoparticles were spherical having an average particle size of ≤ 40 nm.…”
