a b s t r a c tSoil salinity, sodicity and saline groundwater are major constraints to the cultivation of landscape plants along oceanic coasts. A sustainable approach for reclaiming saline-sodic soils in coastal environments is evaluated. Soil tillage, phased saline water management based on soil matric potential under dripirrigation, and the installation of a gravel-sand layer were used. Field trials using the method showed that the proposed approach had the advantages of considerable water conservation, more effective salt leaching and successful re-vegetation with desired species. Severely saline soils became non-saline within the 0-40 cm soil profile after one year and non-saline to moderately saline within the 0-120 cm depth after two years. The approach can rather quickly create an attractive landscape and maintain good plant growth. Plants representing nearly 30 landscape species, including some sensitive to salinity were proposed. Plantings showed survival up to 90% after one and two years. This approach demands less water, improves the ecological environments, and will inspire development of coastal areas.

The ability of heavy metals bioaccumulation to cause toxicity in biological systems-human, animals, microorganisms and plants-is an important issue for environmental health and safety. Recent biotechnological approaches for bioremediation include biomineralization (mineral synthesis by living organisms or biomaterials), biosorption (dead microbial and renewable agricultural biomass), phytostabilization (immobilization in plant roots), hyperaccumulation (exceptional metal concentration in plant shoots), dendroremediation (growing trees in polluted soils), biostimulation (stimulating living microbial population), rhizoremediation (plant and microbe), mycoremediation (stimulating living fungi/mycelial ultrafiltration), cyanoremediation (stimulating algal mass for remediation) and genoremediation (stimulating gene for remediation process). The adequate restoration of the environment requires cooperation, integration and assimilation of such biotechnological advances along with traditional and ethical wisdom to unravel the mystery of nature in the emerging field of bioremediation. This review highlights better understanding of the problems associated with the toxicity of heavy metals to the contaminated ecosystems and their viable, sustainable and eco-friendly bioremediation technologies, especially the mechanisms of phytoremediation of heavy metals along with some case studies in India and abroad. However, the challenges (biosafety assessment and genetic pollution) involved in adopting the new initiatives for cleaning-up the heavy metals-contaminated ecosystems from both ecological and greener point of view must not be ignored.

The variation in free amino acids concentration was examined in halophytes under salt stress conditions during spring and autumn in an arid environment, Jordan. The experiment was conducted in the southern region of the Jordan valley, using four different halophytes namely: Atriplex halimus, Atriplex nummularia, Tamarix aphylla L., and Portulaca oleracea L. Free amino acid concentrations showed changeable patterns under salinity stress conditions compared to the non-stress (control) with respect to plant species and seasonal variation. In general, the amino acid pool during the spring experienced increases in A. halimus with increasing salinity; and decreased in A. nummularia, P. oleracea L., and T. aphylla L., respectively. Whereas, during the autumn, the overall amino acids decreased in A. halimus and A. nummularia, and increased in T. aphylla L. and P. oleracea with increasing salinity. The amino acid pool concentrations of A. halimus L. during the autumn was similar to that in spring under stress condition. Similarly, T. aphylla L. and P. oleracea showed higher rates in the autumn. In contrast, A. nummularia L. exhibited a slight increase in amino acid composition in the autumn under stress conditions. The plantation of salt tolerant plants such as halophytes in saline sodic soils showed an effective decline in soil salinity and can be recommended to be used as a bioreclamation method instead of the traditional leaching method, which requires large amount of fresh water.
