(Bio)polymer/ZnO Nanocomposites for Packaging Applications: A Review of Gas Barrier and Mechanical Properties

Abstract: Nanotechnology is playing a pivotal role in improving quality of life due to its versatile applications in many areas of research. In this regard, nanoparticles have gained significant importance. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) amongst other nanoparticles are being used in producing nanocomposites. Methods like solvent casting, solution casting, solvent volatilization, twin-screw extrusion, melt compounding and extrusion blow molding have been applied to produce ZnO NPs based (bio)polymer composites. These… Show more

“…[ 39 ] reports that system PEEK-ZnO (poly(ether ether ketone)-ZnO) shows a maximum at 5 wt.% of ZnO; PMMA-ZnO at 1 wt.% of NPs [ 40 ]; PLA-ZnO at 2 wt.% [ 41 ]. In summary, such a maximum in Young’s modulus has been related to the distribution of nanoparticles within the polymer matrix and strong interfacial adhesion that can enhance the mechanical properties of nanocomposites [ 42 ].…”

“…Any material used for wrapping foods to increase their shelf life which can be eaten with or without any further removal is well known as an edible hybrid film or coating [15]. Nanotechnology has used vital metals, which currently used to reduce nutrient loss [16,17]. The physiological, chemical and transport characteristics are modified when nanoparticles are added to ordinary liquids compared to their base fluids [18,19].…”

“…In a previous article, we have reviewed the cytotoxic effects of ZnO nanostructures on mammalian cells [67]. As mentioned, ZnO NPs are widely used in cosmetics, suncreams, UV-absorbing packaging films and fabrics for food and medical textile applications, as well as therapeutic agents for cancer treatment [42][43][44][45][46]67]. In addition, ZnO NPs have also been added to animal (e.g., chicken) feed to promote the growth performance of the animals [319].…”
