Bio-Inspired Electricity Storage Alternatives to Support Massive Demand-Side Energy Generation: A Review of Applications at Building Scale

Abstract: This work has its origin in the growing demands of energy regulations to meet future local targets and to propose a global implementation framework. A literature review related to conventional electrical energy storage systems has been carried out, presenting different cases analyzed at building scale to deepen in nature-inspired processes that propose reductions in environmental impact and present improvements in these storage devices. The use of batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, is the most promin… Show more

“…Thus, the disadvantage of REs is that their sources, such as solar power and wind, are not available all the time. Consequently, REs should be stored to continually assure the existence of electrical energy [ 1 , 2 ]. A diversity of energy storage (ES) schemes exist that involve mechanical, magnetic, chemical, electrochemical, electrical, biological, and thermal energy storage.…”

“…Fuel cells (FCs) are promising means for extracting the stored energy via intermittent REs in the absence of a combustion process [ 11 ]. Hydrogen is produced by the surplus REs via electrolyzers then, when there is shortage in REs, electrical energy is generated from hydrogen by FCs [ 2 ]. Because of the merits of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM-FC), it is favored over other types of FC.…”

“…20 The above factors must be clarified through a comprehensive survey so that important research work from previous authors can be assembled, comprehended, and sorted in a useful manner to make clear the study areas, which can help policymakers and professionals pick the best energy storage technologies and mechanisms for their specific power grid. 21 Given the relevance and challenges of electric energy storage, various facets of the issue are examined and emphasized with the help of a literature study.…”

“…All these renewable energy sources need a storage system capable of supporting the demand when the source cannot supply electricity. Such systems already exist, but they are not entirely "green" for the ambient environment [1]. Energy storage systems (ESS) are devices that convert electrical energy from power systems into a reservoir form that can be converted back to electrical energy when it is needed by the consumer.…”
