Bio-guided fractionation of extracts of Geranium robertianum L.: Relationship between phenolic profile and biological activity

Abstract: A B S T R A C TGeranium robertianum L. is used in folk medicine and herbalism practice for the treatment of a variety of ailments. Recently, we studied the bioactivity of several aqueous and organic extracts of this plant. In this work, the more active extracts were fractionated and the fractions evaluated for their antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity against several human tumor cell lines and non-tumor porcine liver primary cells. Some of the fractions from the acetone extract consistently displayed low EC … Show more

“…Compounds 1–9 were previously reported in a study on P. graveolens [ 55 ]. Compounds 2, 6, and 7 have been reported in other species of the Geraniacae family, except from geranium, i.e., Geranium molle L. [ 56 ] and Geranium robertianum L. [ 57 ]. Finally, to the best of our knowledge compounds 10, 11 have not been reported in Geraniacae family.…”

“…Medicinal plants have been used as an alternative to orthodox medicine in many countries, Nigeria inclusive. Despite their widespread use, few scientific studies have been undertaken to ascertain the efficacy of traditional remedies (Graça et al, 2017). Thousands of plant species have been identified as a good source of therapeutics, and the use of these compounds is gradually increasing (Ishii et al, 1984).…”
