Bio-degumming technology of jute bast by Pectobacterium sp. DCE-01

Abstract: Among industrial fiber crops, jute is ranked second to cotton in terms of yield and planting area worldwide. The traditional water retting and chemical semi-degumming methods restrict the development of the jute industry. Jute fiber can be extracted from jute bast through mechanical rolling (preprocessing), culture of bacteria, soaking fermentation (liquor ratio = 10, inoculum size = 1 %, temperature = 35 °C, and time = 15 h), inactivation, washing, and drying. Pectobacterium sp. DCE-01 secretes key degumming … Show more

“…The use of any crude or pure enzymes for the degumming of jute has never been reported. Only a few recent studies have focused on the microbial degumming of jute fibres using bacterial isolates . The microbial degumming process involves 15 h to 15 d while the time period of 1 h that is required for degumming, reported in the present study, is much less.…”

“…Jute fibres are processed to remove pectin and associated wax during a pre‐processing step called degumming before they are used for spun yarns. The degumming of jute is traditionally achieved using a method called retting in which decorticated jute stem is immersed in ponds for several days . During retting, polygalacturonases, pectate lyases, and pectin esterases depolymerize pectin that causes the removal of wax .…”

“…Biological degumming technology saves chemical reagents, thereby reducing production costs and environmental pollution, improving spinning properties of bast fibers. Therefore, biological degumming represents the popular direction of the bast fiber processing industry with its advantages of high efficiency, low emission levels, and energy saving (Duan et al, 2016).…”

“…11,12 D. dadantii DCE-01 has been verified as an efficient and broad-spectrum bacterium used for the biorefinery of herbaceous fibers. 13,14 It can simultaneously secrete extracellular pectinase, mannase, and xylanase. The clone and expression of its pectinase and mannase gene have been conducted.…”
