Binaural model-based dynamic-range compression

Abstract: The suggested binaural synchronisation of compression algorithms showed a limited effect on the tested outcome measures, however, linking could be situationally beneficial to preserve a natural binaural perception of the acoustical environment.

“…Kreisman, Mazevski, Schum, and Sockalingam (2010) reported a significant improvement in speech understanding in noise (smaller SNR loss and lower receptive threshold for sentences) using hearing aids with wireless synchrony versus without synchrony. Ernst et al. (2018) also found a preference for linked compression on a paired comparison with independent compression.…”

“…Linked gains have been shown to improve ILDs for hearing aids. Ernst et al (2018) assessed ILDs for an independent compression versus a binaurally linked, model-based, fast-acting dynamic compression algorithm. ILD preservation for binaurally synchronized algorithms was better than for the independent compression.…”

“…In general terms, FAC has the effect of "flattening" ENV, whereas ENV is preserved by SAC (Figure 2) (150,159). FAC may therefore impair speech perception by changing the speech signal in a number of ways: distorting speech envelope cues; amplifying the noise in gaps, undermining gap detection; and reducing modulation detection that enables separation of individual speakers (150,(160)(161)(162)(163)(164)(165)(166). FAC might also impair sound localization based on interaural differences, although the evidence for this is weak (167).…”
