The purpose of this study is to explore the factors and benefits that can encourage the building management team to adopt the solar energy usage in Malaysia. Solar energy has been long introduced to the industry as a practical renewable technology, but the adoption rate is still low in Malaysia due to the dependence on oil and fossil fuels. Thus, costs and benefits of solar energy application and the best solar panels to be used in Malaysia have been explored for practitioners’ reference to improve the adoption rate. Mixed method was adopted in this study. First, quantitative method was adopted where 200 sets of online questionnaire survey were distributed to the public to collect the information about the solar energy application. Next, a semi-structured interview was carried out to further investigate the reliability of collected data. Based on the findings of the questionnaires, the most significant benefits of solar energy are renewable and clean source of energy, eco-friendly, and cost saving. The results indicated that Mono-crystalline silicon cell is the most popular type of solar panel that widely used in Malaysia. However, the adoption of solar energy is low due to the high initial cost and insufficient knowledge and awareness among citizens. Through the results of this study, the adoption of solar energy can be doubled in future as the results reveal the factors and benefits that could help the policy makers to utilize the implementation of solar energy in residential buildings that massively consuming the energy in daily basis.

In this paper, the optimal design of a hybrid energy system (HES), consisting of photovoltaic technology integrated with fuel cells (HPV/FC) and relying on hydrogen storage, is performed to meet the annual demand of a residential complex to find the minimum total net present cost (TNPC), while observing the reliability constraint as the energy-not-supplied probability (ENSP) and considering real meteorological data of the Kuala Lumpur city in Malaysia. The decision variables include the size of system components, which are optimally determined by an improved artificial ecosystem-based optimization algorithm (IAEO). The conventional AEO is improved using the dynamic lens-imaging learning strategy (DLILS) to prevent premature convergence. The results demonstrated that the decrease (increase) of the reliability constraint leads to an increase (decrease) in the TNPC, as well as the cost of electricity (COE). For a maximum reliability constraint of 5%, the results show that the TNPC and COE obtained USD 2.247 million and USD 0.4046 million, respectively. The superior performance of the IAEO has been confirmed with the AEO, particle swarm optimization (PSO), and manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO), with the lowest TNPC and higher reliability. In addition, the effectiveness of the hydrogen tank efficiency and load changes is confirmed in the hybrid system design.

Harvesting energy from ocean wave is a promising renewable energy source due to its high efficiency, carbon-free, it is not affected by depletion of fossil fuels, and it is replenished constantly. The existing generators used in wave energy harvesting such as linear generator and slider crank mechanism have some limitations, which include lower efficiency and technologically challenging. Thus, in this work, wave energy harvesting technique using rotational generator based on scotch yoke mechanism is proposed. A typical slider crank to convert linear motion into rotational motion is replaced by scotch yoke mechanism to yield higher efficiency. A comparison of the performance of wave energy system between employing slider crank and scotch yoke is made to evaluate the superiority of the proposed mechanism. From the results obtained in this work, it is found that the output voltage of rotational generator employing scotch yoke mechanism is higher compared to that of rotational generator employing slider crank for the same input power. Thus, rotational generator by employing scotch yoke mechanism can be one of the alternative methods for ocean wave energy harvesting.
