Binary Mixtures of Nonane and n-Alkylcyclohexanes: Densities and Speeds of Sound within the Temperature Range (288.15–333.15) K and Viscosities at 288.15, 293.15, and 298.15 K and 0.1 MPa

Abstract

This work reports the density, viscosity, and speed of sound of nonane in binary mixtures with n-alkylcyclohexanes (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, octyl, decyl, and dodecyl) and the derived properties of excess molar volume (V m E), excess speed of sound (c E), excess isentropic compressibility (K s E), and viscosity deviation (Δη). The densities, speeds of sound, and viscosities ranged from 686.39 to 825.77 kg·m–3, from 1065.9 to 1442.3 m·s–1, and from 0.66 to 9.21 mPa·s, respectively. For most mixtures, the mixture densities, viscosities, and speeds of sound increased with increasing concentration of the component with the higher property value and with decreasing temperature. The K s Es and V m Es of the nonane mixtures decreased monotonically and the c Es increased monotonically as the size of the alkylcyclohexane increased. The smallest Δη value was found for n-hexylcyclohexane/nonane mixtures. For most mixture systems, the signs of K s E and V m E were the same, suggesting that enhanced volumes were more compressible, and reduced volumes were less compressible than the space taken up by the individual components. The excess properties and deviation of the nonane mixtures followed trends that are consistent with those of other linear alkanes mixed with the same alkylcyclohexanes.
