Although vanadium-based nanomaterials have found extensive use in industry, their influence on ecosystems and living organisms is not yet well investigated. In this study, hydrothermal methods were utilized for the synthesis of vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles (V2 O5 NPs). The gained NPs were characterized using XRD, FT-IR, EDS, DLS, SEM and TEM techniques. Subsequently, the toxic effects of V2 O5 NPs on the model green microalgae Chlorella vulgaris were evaluated. According to the obtained results, V2 O5 NPs caused a significant reduction in cell number and biomass production of algae in a dose and time dependent manner. Moreover, flow cytometric analysis confirmed a reduction in the quantity of living cells. Scanning electron microscopy showed plasmolysis and deformation of the cells after exposure to nanoparticles. The photosynthetic pigments and phenolics content exhibited a decrease in comparison with the control sample. Although, non-enzymatic antioxidant system in C. vulgaris displayed an average action, antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) showed a dose dependent increasing trend. These intercellular reactions designated the activation of the antioxidant defense system in response to the induced oxidative stress by V2 O5 NPs.

The extensive use of nanoparticles (NPs) in diverse applications causes their localization to aquatic habitats, affecting the metabolic products of primary producers in aquatic ecosystems, such as algae. Synthesized calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaO NPs) are of the scarcely studied NPs. Thus, the current work proposed that the exposure to CaO NPs may instigate metabolic pathway to be higher than that of normally growing algae, and positively stimulate algal biomass. In this respect, this research was undertaken to study the exposure effect of CaO NPs (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 µg mL −1 ) on the growth, photosynthesis, respiration, oxidative stress, antioxidants, and lipid production of the microalga Coccomyxa chodatii SAG 216-2. The results showed that the algal growth concomitant with chlorophyll content, photosynthesis, and calcium content increased in response to CaO NPs. The contents of biomolecules such as proteins, amino acids, and carbohydrates were also promoted by CaO NPs with variant degrees. Furthermore, lipid production was enhanced by the applied nanoparticles. CaO NPs induced the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide, while lipid peroxidation was reduced, revealing no oxidative behavior of the applied nanoparticles on alga. Also, CaO NPs have a triggering effect on the antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and guaiacol peroxidase. The results recommended the importance of the level of 60 µg mL −1 CaO NPs on lipid production (with increasing percentage of 65% compared to control) and the highest dry matter acquisition of C. chodatii. This study recommended the feasibility of an integrated treatment strategy of CaO NPs in augmenting biomass, metabolic up-regulations, and lipid accumulation in C. chodatii.

Pharmaceutical products (PPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are two prevalent emerging contaminants that have garnered extensive environmental focus. The present study aimed to investigate both pristine and combined toxicity of PPs (metronidazole, diclofenac, and ibuprofen) and polystyrene NPs (with NH2 and COOH surface functionalization). Our findings suggest that Chlorella sp. experienced only a slight growth impediment when exposed to pristine PPs (1 mg/L). In contrast, PSNPs (1 mg/L) resulted in substantial growth inhibition. However, the combination of PPs and PSNPs showed a reduction in toxic effects when compared to pristine PSNPs. Additionally, independent action modeling revealed that the combination of PPs and PSNPs resulted in an antagonistic mode of interaction. Zeta potential analysis revealed the colloidal instability of PSNPs in the presence of PPs. This could have facilitated the aggregation and rapid settlement of PSNPs, consequently lessening their direct contact with the algal cells. Furthermore, ROS production significantly decreased in the combinations compared to the pristine PSNPs. This decrease in the ROS production subsequently led to a reduction in antioxidant activity and an enhancement in photosynthetic efficiency in the cells. These findings provide valuable insights into combined toxicity effects of PPs and PSNPs on primary producers like microalgae.
